At Vet At Your Door, our passion for caring for pets shines through in every patient we see. One such patient is Bo, a sweet, 7-year-old black domestic shorthair cat, and his devoted owner, Mary Bowes. Mary’s commitment to Bo’s health has been a beacon of inspiration for our team, as she works tirelessly to ensure he receives the care he needs to manage his eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC), a condition that causes painful skin lesions.
Bo Bowes’s (see what Mary did there? 😂) journey began with recurrent skin flare-ups, which first appeared as ulcerative lesions around his face and ears. His condition, EGC, is often linked to underlying allergies and can be challenging to manage, requiring a tailored and often long-term treatment plan. After his first flare-up, we initiated treatment with antibiotics and steroids, which successfully brought Bo relief. However, Bo’s condition has proven to be chronic, with the flare-ups returning periodically.
In March 2024, Bo experienced his third flare-up, showing signs of redness, hair loss, and thickened, irritated skin between his right eye and ear. The discomfort was clear, and we knew that swift action was needed to keep him comfortable. We diagnosed the flare-up as another instance of EGC, and as before, his treatment involved a combination of an antibiotic injection (Convenia) to address any underlying infections, and a long-acting steroid to reduce inflammation.
One of the advantages of our house call service is the ability to treat pets like Bo in the comfort of their own homes, where they feel safest. By minimizing the stress of travel and clinic visits, we can observe Bo’s condition in his natural environment and make treatment as seamless as possible. This has allowed us to make swift adjustments while keeping Bo relaxed and comfortable, essential for managing chronic conditions like EGC.
Mary’s proactive involvement in Bo’s care has been nothing short of remarkable. She diligently tracked his medication dosages, communicated regularly with us, and followed through on every step of his treatment plan. Bo’s condition requires ongoing monitoring and careful adjustments, particularly as we work to reduce his steroid use to the lowest effective dose. Mary’s attention to detail—such as noting changes in his skin condition, water intake, and behavior—has allowed us to fine-tune his care with precision, ensuring that we can catch any issues before they worsen.
In addition to the medical treatments, we’ve also worked with Mary to explore potential environmental triggers for Bo’s condition, including allergens in the home. Together, we’ve discussed diet modifications, allergy prevention strategies, and the importance of maintaining a stress-free environment for Bo. While managing a chronic condition like EGC can be complex, Mary’s partnership in Bo’s care has allowed us to stay ahead of his symptoms and provide him with the highest quality of life possible.
One reason Bo’s care has been so successful is our One Team approach. At Vet At Your Door, this means that the same veterinary team sees each patient, building strong relationships and deep understanding over time. With Bo, this continuity has been crucial. Our team, led by Dr. Jesse Robinson, along with Veterinary Technician Cassy Bois, LVT, and Client Liaison Mel Bonney, has worked together to provide Bo with personalized and seamless care at every step of his journey. Because we know his history and treatment plan inside and out, we can make informed adjustments quickly, without needing to revisit his entire medical background at each visit. This continuity has made a world of difference in keeping Bo’s condition under control and giving Mary peace of mind. You can learn more about how our One Team approach works here.
At the heart of it all, though, is our deep love for pets like Bo and the amazing owners who care for them. Mary’s dedication has made a huge impact on Bo’s well-being, and we are honored to be part of their journey. Thank you, Mary and Bo, for trusting us with your care. We’re proud to walk this path with you every step of the way.
